Australian Small Cap Opportunities
Overview
The Paradice Australian Small Cap Opportunities Fund is a new strategy launched in 2023. It looks to build on the successful small cap investment ethos at Paradice, but with a limited Funds Under Management (FUM) to help maximise investor returns through alpha generation.
This ethos relates to our view that equity markets are inefficient and therefore offer excellent investment opportunities over time. The inefficiencies arise due to excesses in investor emotion, a focus on short term investment horizons and, on occasion, a sole focus on one aspect of a company’s financial health – its profit and loss statement.
We believe a specific focus on cashflow and on the medium-term investment case for a company is critical – and that being able to look through short term earnings and market volatility is an important source of alpha.
We look for quality businesses that are not overly complex in nature, with strong balance sheets, great management teams and Boards. We diligently implement our investment process which has a strong focus on risk, and supplement this with an extensive company visitation program.
The Fund typically invests in 30-70 companies listed outside of the S&P/ASX 100, providing investors with an exposure to a diversified portfolio of emerging Australian businesses.
The strategy is implemented by two experienced portfolio manager/analysts in Sam Theodore and Michael Peet – both of whom have strong alignment to the investment performance of the strategy through the remuneration model and fund co-investment.
Objective
The Paradice Australian Small Cap Opportunities Fund aims to outperform the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Total Return Index over the longer term, after fees and before taxes.

Portfolio Managers
Sam Theodore
Sam is the lead Portfolio Manager of the Paradice Australian Small Cap Opportunities Fund, and has over 19 years of financial market experience. Prior to joining Paradice, Sam was the Portfolio Manager for the Australian High Conviction Long Short Fund at Blackrock, and prior to that role was an Analyst/Portfolio Manager for the Blackrock Concentrated Industrial Share Fund. Prior to his time at Blackrock, Sam was a senior research analyst at UBS where he held numerous roles including lead coverage of the Gaming and Entertainment sector, Mining Services and Contractors, Paper/Packaging, Media as well as leading the Small Cap Research team. Sam holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Major) and Bachelor of Laws from Macquarie University.
Michael Peet
Michael is a Portfolio Manager / Analyst in the Paradice Australian Small Cap Opportunities Fund, and has 30 years of financial market experience. Prior to joining Paradice, Michael spent 7 years as the head of Emerging Companies research at Goldman Sachs. Prior to that, Michael held positions at CBA Equities, Yaz Investments, Alliance Bernstein, UBS and County NatWest. Michael holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from University of Technology Sydney and a Master of Commerce from the University of NSW.
